SWADESHI AND BOYCOTT MOVEMENT


  • Swadeshi and Boycott movement was a byproduct of the Partition of Bengal in 1905.
  • The aim of the Partition was to create a division between Hindus and Musilms.
  • Viceroy during the partition of Bengal- Lord Curzon.
  • 'Congress is tottering to its fall, and my ambition is to assist it to a peaceful demise.'- Curzon.
  • His attempt to partition of Bengal gave rise to Swadeshi and Boycott movement.
  • Congress extended its full support to the movement.In December 1904, 20th session of the congress took place in Mumbai presided over by Sir Henry Cotton.
  • The news about the approval to the partition first appeared in the Calcutta press in July 6, 1905.
  • The main Newspapers that condemned the partition were Bengalee, Hitwadi, Sanjiwani and Charu Mihir.
  • Sanjiwani came up with the idea of Boycott of british goods.
  • The four fold programme of boycott were 
  1. Abjure the English cloth
  2. Abjure the English speech
  3. Relinquish honorary offices under the government
  4. Make a social boycott of all those who use foreign goods
  • Partition took effect on october 16, 1905.
  • Prominent leaders were Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Bombay, Swami Shradhanand in Punjab and Subramania Aiyar in Madras.
  • Rabindranath Tagore plunged into the movement against partition like an activist. His poems ignited the spirits of the youth.
  • Partition was annulled in 1911; the British Government finally had to yield to the continued opposition of the people.
