SWADESHI AND BOYCOTT MOVEMENT
- Swadeshi and Boycott movement was a byproduct of the Partition of Bengal in 1905.
- The aim of the Partition was to create a division between Hindus and Musilms.
- Viceroy during the partition of Bengal- Lord Curzon.
- 'Congress is tottering to its fall, and my ambition is to assist it to a peaceful demise.'- Curzon.
- His attempt to partition of Bengal gave rise to Swadeshi and Boycott movement.
- Congress extended its full support to the movement.In December 1904, 20th session of the congress took place in Mumbai presided over by Sir Henry Cotton.
- The news about the approval to the partition first appeared in the Calcutta press in July 6, 1905.
- The main Newspapers that condemned the partition were Bengalee, Hitwadi, Sanjiwani and Charu Mihir.
- Sanjiwani came up with the idea of Boycott of british goods.
- The four fold programme of boycott were
- Abjure the English cloth
- Abjure the English speech
- Relinquish honorary offices under the government
- Make a social boycott of all those who use foreign goods
- Partition took effect on october 16, 1905.
- Prominent leaders were Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Bombay, Swami Shradhanand in Punjab and Subramania Aiyar in Madras.
- Rabindranath Tagore plunged into the movement against partition like an activist. His poems ignited the spirits of the youth.
- Partition was annulled in 1911; the British Government finally had to yield to the continued opposition of the people.
